Congratulations, dire! This is a huge moment. And believe what they tell you - the first year is the hardest. Which isn't to say that you should drop your guard or anything, but aside from the occasional irrational urge, it does get easier the more time you have. Eventually you hardly ever think about it.

I had my last drink July 16, 1986 at the ripe old age of 23, and aside from a couple of horrible times during a particularly horrible relationship, I have never missed it.

Happy Birthday!

(No biggie, because this isn't about me, but it is actually just past 23 years - which means that sometime in the next six months or so I'll pass a point where I've lived more years SINCE I got sober than I did BEFORE I got sober, THAT blows my mind ... )

Talking about unwritten, I haven't forgotten that I promised to email you, and I will! But meantime, know that it means a lot to me that you've come so far. Congratulations on your first anniversary and best wishes for many more anniversaries to come.

If nothing else, you've no doubt seen that I can be just as rude, abrasive and dumb-headed as any other idiot on here. It's not about perfection, but the acceptance of non-perfection.

I think it's awesome - and a total trip - that you met your wife the day you got sober, and I love how EVERY SINGLE ONE OF US breaks that unritten rule about no relationships in the first year. You can't learn to operate a car just by reading the owner's manual ...

I'm feeling a lot of love for you today, dire - I hope you & the Mrs. dire do something special to celebrate.

thanks man, and Mrs. Dire says thanks too!! my first several attempts, i went along with the "no big changes, no relationships, blah blah blah." that just sent me back to detox and rehabs - lol. figured i'd try a different approach and actually try to be happy. like "they" say, insanity is doing the same thing and expecting different results. well, so far anyways, going against the grain of the "AA rules" has worked out better than any other approach I have tried. I never had more than 60 days under my belt before a disastrous turn for the worse. it is amazing how a little happiness, great supportive people, wonderful kids, and a beautiful, smart, loving (sober) wife can do for sobriety.

thank you for all your kind words!!
